Abstract
This study was conducted to explore the relationship between locus of control, health belief, and the life style of gastric cancer patients and those of general population. The subjects of this study were 130 advanced and early gastric cancer patients and 131 general population who does not have gastric cancer. The data were collected from July, 1998 to Feb., 1999 by using structured question naire. The tools were Moon¡¯s Health Belief Scale and Multiple Locus of Control developed by Wallston, Wallston, and DeVellis. The data were analysed by SAS program using frequency, x^2-test. Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient, ANOVA, Scheffe-test, and t-test. The results were as follows: 1. The correlationship between perceived benefit of Health belief and Locus of control of subjects, and between perceived barrier, perceived severity chance locus of control were significant. 2. There were statistically significant differences in perceived sensitivity, barrier, and severity among health belief between two groups. 3. There was statistically significant difference of life style between gastric cancer patients and general population in aspects of frequency of exercise and meal, drinking of green tea, taking vegetable, drinking milk, taking fruits and safty food, and prefierence of salted fish. 4. There were statistically significant differences in perceived sensitivity according to weight, educational level, and birth order, in perceived barrier according to educational level, and in perceived severity according to occupation among demographic characteristics of the study subjects. 5. There were statistically significant differences in level of stress and personality between gastric cancer patients and general population in conclusion, it is necessary for gastric cancer patients to change the life style through educational program. Nurse should intervence to decrease the level of stress and to loose the personality. In future studies, it is needed to explore gastric cancer related characteristics and lowering the perceived barrier for gastric cancer patients to improve the level of health belief oriented health status by doing health behavior.
